Meet Sue

Volunteer since 2020

"Contact & connection is important as that one call could mean a lot to a person who is lonely."

Sue, volunteer since 2020

Tell us about how you came to be a ReConnect Volunteer?

I grew up in London, before moving to Stroud (via the Scilly Isles!) where I settled and raised two boys. I had a close relationship with my mum and when she developed dementia, I supported her to live a life that is enriching and full as possible.

My paid job involved listening and helping people. When I retired, I suddenly felt lonely and this spurred me on to help other people experiencing loneliness through volunteering with Reconnect. Since joining Reconnect I have met and been in contact with some great people, shared experiences and learnt a lot. I do not drive but help out as much as I can, befriending and with administration tasks.

What are you hopeful for in the future?

I want to keep spreading optimism, helping people build their confidence to get out and meet in social environments. I’m looking forward to visiting more people and supporting people on the telephone.

“I hope to make a difference to my befriendees and listen to how they are feeling. “
